Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

Intramuscular Stimulation (IMS)

What is IMS?
IMS is a form of treatment where dry needles are used to either impact tight muscles (dry needling), or help to reset the nervous system (GunnIMS) in chronic pain. GunnIMS is based on the radiculopathy model whereby dry needling focuses more on trigger point needling. Our therapists are educated in both.

Practitioners use single-use, sterile disposable needles. All practitioners have been trained regarding precautions and contraindications to treatment.

What can I expect? Does it hurt?
Needling often causes a reaction where the muscle grabs, or contracts briefly while the needle is inserted (1-2 seconds). Some people describe this as uncomfortable or painful, others feel nothing at all.

Some clients may notice 2-3 days of muscle soreness (similar to delayed onset muscles soreness) that subsides gradually, others feel no long lasting reactions.

IMS can be useful in treating many conditions, such as: myofascial pain syndrome (chronic pain where there is no obvious injury or inflammation), muscle tension/tightness, radiculopathy.

Please talk with our practitioners to see if IMS is appropriate for you.
